Griffon RFC News - 05/06/06
May 6th, 2006 Battle Creek RFC 11 Ann Arbor 51
Despite the big score, I really wasn't disappointed with how we played.
We were trying to implement our game plan, we just didn't execute it very
well in this game. We started out "flat", and didn't really
catch on to this game throughout the 80 minutes. A couple of players said
after the game that it was their own individual worst performances of
the season. Our high point of the game was when we trapped Ann Arbor in
their 22, and developed a nice rolling maul which Don B. finished off
by diving over the line for a try. Since we had just practiced that the
previous week, it was nice to see it "in action" and well executed.
We then mysteriously abandoned our mauling game!
Dan L. kicked a couple of long range penalties to round out our scoring.
When I watched Ann Arbor warm up , I saw them throwing the ball around,
and hoped that they would do this in the game, since most teams who try
to do this end up making mistakes, which we are able to capitalise on.
Unfortunately, we ran into a team who had good ball handlers and strong
runners in their back line, and they didn't make many handling errors.
This Ann Arbor team travelled to Kalamazoo with 9 players the week before,
so they benefited from the availability of their younger college student
players at their home game.
We travelled with 14, and Zeb from Ann Arbor helped us out by playing
the full 80 minutes for us - Al did a nice job of convincing him we only
needed him for 10 minutes!
Thanks again to the players who made the road trip.
See you at the Classic next week, May 13th at our home field.
