Griffon RFC News - 04/29/06
Note: Tuesday's practice will be at the Marshall softball
fields on Michigan Ave. in Marshall. On south side of street (right, when
heading into Marshall from I-69).
April 29th: Battle Creek Griffon RFC 62 Chicago Dragons 0
A quick opening try got the Griffons moving early in the game, and we
ended with 10 tries and 6 conversions. We held up the Dragons maul a few
times, most noticeably down on our goal line, and forced turnovers which
gave us back the ball - a great defensive mauling effort. The pack also
stole lineout and scrum possession from our opponents put-in, so we had
plenty of ball to work with. After our quick early score, we got a little
"loose" with our play, and some scores came from good individual
athletic finishing, rather than the solid team play we have been practicing.
But, after a while, we did get back to our normal style of play , and
our kicking game forced the Dragons back into their own 22 where we kept
pressure on them and took advantage of our own ball possession and capitalised
on their handling mistakes.
Our kicking game was solid for about three quarters of the game, and then
got a little wayward - some more practice should easily correct this.
With 10 tries being scored, we received 10 kick offs, and our kick-off
reception was a low point - we need to consolidate around the ball-carrier,
and secure possession. This is an area of the game I would like to practice
more this week, as there is room for improvement.
I want to praise the Dragons for staying in the game despite the score,
and still playing hard at the end of the game.
Congratulations to the Griffons for a nice home win, a good reward for
the hard work you have put in so far this season.
