Griffon RFC News - 03/20/06
March 18th,2006: Canton, OH 10 Battle Creek 10
A solid first game for the Griffons in Canton. We had a strong wind
behind us in the first half, and we controlled possession well. We
did not take advantage of the wind by kicking for the corners, and that
is something we will have to address in future games; to make sure that
we take advantage of the playing conditions.
The first score came with great pressure from Hiram Garcia forcing a Canton
player to fumble the ball over his own goal line, and Ken Burdette was
there to pounce for the try.
Stephen Ratliff added the conversion for a 7-0 lead at half-time.
The Griffons were performing well in the rucks, and in the lineouts, and
holding their own in the scrums. Canton's tactic was to rely on break-away
attacks with individual runners, and eventually they scored a try in the
corner - the conversion was missed.
They now had the wind at their backs, and used their kicking game to put
us defending near our line.
With a strong wind in the Griffons faces , it was difficult to progress
up the field, but we did move into the Canton half and were awarded a
penalty.
Despite a strong wind against the kicker, Stephen Ratliff kicked a penalty
that came just short, and Canton held onto the ball on the ground to give
away a penalty close to the posts.
We made the correct decision again to go for posts, and Ratliff kicked
to make the score 10-5 for the Griffons.
Canton continued to try to score from individual breakaways, and eventually
they were successful with a try to tie the game 10 - 10.
So, it was a solid performance by the Griffons, with some loose play at
the end of the game as the fitness gas tanks ran out - we will correct
the mistakes at practice.
